Please remember:
- Sleep!
- Breakfast (the snacks we’ve requested are for during the testing break or afterward)
- Comfortable clothing and an extra sweater or hoodie (just in case the a.c. is higher than your child likes)
- Do NOT send any technology devices or watches that make sound during the testing time. They will not be needed and could cause a “testing irregularity” (noise) :/
- There will not be any homework, OTHER THAN READING MINUTES, during testing. Testing seems like such a short amount of their time during the day but it wears them out so we would rather they play outside and get to bed early.

Thank you again for your patience as we have transitioned to Ms. Kunst. She now has a lap top and e-mail address. Please continue to include both of us in your e-mails, as we will both reply as soon as possible.
The blog address will remain the same. The students can still web-search GoodallHess and our blog will come up (on a web-search with our names KunstHess, you get a lot of German.) The Ford Website links will take you to our blog as well.
Reading 25 book challenge was reviewed again today. Many students may have read books, but have not done their reports. New ones are attached at the top of this page. They cannot participate in the celebration unless they have read and reported on 6 books for the nine weeks.
Online resources have been updated to the 4th grade resource page. There are links to on-line reading. Students have been given passwords in their agenda. This reading can also count towards their 30 minutes of reading each night.
Our class schedule is now also attached above. This may help with scheduling appointments or knowing where we are.
The blog will not be updated nightly. Please see your child's agenda for their homework. We will update the blog with changes or special information. We will also give an overview of what is currently being taught.
Our Class Routine:
Morning: Reading quietly in the room. Unpack at 7:40 am with agenda out for checking and homework turned in.
NIKKI folders go home on Monday with graded work and notes. PLEASE SIGN THEIR BEHAVIOR CARD ON THE BACK.
Students should READ each night for 30 minutes. Please sign agendas daily.
Reading/Language Arts: Rotations - There are 3 rotations, and students choose their activities. A mini lesson is taught before each rotation.
Each day they will "read to self" for 1 rotation. Other rotations may include group work with a the teacher.
Items in rotation: Vocabulary words, on-line reading, non-fiction with a friend, writing.
They choose different activities that involve the above 4 things. They do this each day.
Math: This is done as whole group instruction and then different methods of practicing the concept. Our computer time also coincides with math, so sometimes the schedules can be switched with LA, or we will do math on the computers.
Social Studies/Science: These alternate or integrate depending on the topics.
Current Subjects: Language Arts - writing Vocabulary Unit 3
Reading comprehension - non fiction
Math - finished rounding, place value and powers of 10. Currently doing multiples and factors.
Social Studies - map skills and economics
Science - nature introduction and currently learning the water cycle with weather.
We have also been doing a lot of testing. Students have taken the Write Score for writing assessment. They have also taken short county assessments on math.

Parents,
Thank you for being patient with the blog for these last few weeks. As we transition with Ms. Kunst, things will be more organized. We will be starting a new blog so that students can access using Ms. Kunst's name, and not Ms. Goodall's (I have taught them that a quick Google search for Goodallhess gets us at the top.) The new site will be linked to our names on the Ford site, but if you have a link on your favorites, you may need to change this. This will take place after the Labor Day weekend.
Also, Ms. Kunst should have an e-mail address and laptop by next week as well. Please continue to send all communication through me. Ms. Kunst and I work together and I share any information with her.
Box tops for education has begun. Also t-shirt orders are due Friday.
Sincerely,
Ms. Hess
THIS WEEK:
Reading/LA: This week students have been learning about the different centers that we will be doing for LA and Reading. Ms. Kunst has been reviewing, teaching and modeling, and the students have been practicing these activities. Each week students will have a "Tic Tac Toe" board that they will need to complete. Examples will be posted on the new blog.
Math: We have been working on powers of 10. Example: 20 x 3 = 60. They need to understand not only the basic algorithm, but to truly know that they are making/regrouping to make another place value. There are videos linked to the blog if you would like to see what we are doing.
HW: Page 201-202 in their math book.
Social Studies: Economics. We have been listening to stories that have economics imbedded in them. They are learning vocabulary and gaining understanding. We will begin map studies tomorrow.
Science: Weather and the water cycle will begin later.

Dear Parents, I have waited patiently for my Cobb County email to be up and running but since it hasn’t happened yet, I’ve asked Ms. Hess to send this on my behalf! Today is Ms. Goodall’s final day in the classroom and I will begin teaching full time tomorrow (Wednesday, August 24th). Ms. Hess and I spent many hours over the weekend moving furniture, re-decorating a little, and hauling in my own teaching materials. We are ready for the transition and expect that it will go smoothly for all of us. Please let us know if you hear otherwise from your child so that we can address any concerns right away. I met many of you at Open House but if you were unable to attend and would like to meet face-to-face, please send a note or email (through Ms. Hess for the time being) and we can set up a good time. I will be sending emails to keep you updated on any changes to classroom procedures but we will be trying to keep those changes to a minimum. Red folders with the week’s work will continue to come home and need a signature on Mondays and the agenda will be used daily for homework, recording reading and parent signature, and communication between home and school. Several of you have asked how you can help out. As I settle in, I will let you know via email if we are in need of any volunteers or classroom supplies. I appreciate the support! I’m looking forward to a great fourth grade year with your children! Sincerely, Kim Kunst |

Discussion previewed the book by talking about life cycles. This unit will take several more days and will be continued next week. August 10th Wednesday:
Ms Goodall was absent again today. OPEN HOUSE THURSDAY! 6:00-8:00 Two sessions in the classrooms 6:00 - 6:45 and 7:00 - 7:45. Please review and sign the 4th grade handbook which is linked on the right. Return the signed sheet at open house. Math: We have begun Wednesday: Ms. Goodall was absent today. Class continued as normal.
Reading: Ms. Goodall or Ms. Hess reads a story/book to them each day after announcements. Today we read "Up North at the Cabin." This will begin to introduce writing and reading comprehension. We organized our notebooks and learned about the 25 Books Challenge. Students should be reading 6 to7, 100 page books per nine weeks (over 101 - 299 pages = 2 books, 300 + pages = 3 books). They have a record in the back of the LA notebook /journal that they will keep track of their book reading. They will also be submitting a book review. Examples are in their LA journal. They have to read specific types of books. Math: We played "I have, Who has" to review our multiplication. Tomorrow we will set up our math journals and review the standards that we will be learning this nine weeks. Science: We discovered a bug today in the boy's bathroom. We learned how to draw a detailed description of the bug. We got our Science journals organized with notes and included the bug in our journal. Ask your child what we discovered the bug was. Class Routine and Behaviors: We learned more about the routine of the class and the behaviors expected. They learned about the accountability sheets for their behavior. If they commit an infraction of the rules, they will be marked. As a parent/guardian they will give you a sheet to sign at the end of the week. This signed form then needs to be returned. We also learned about the positive rewards. Students earn "sickles" for following directions and can redeem them for candy. There are also bi-weekly 4th grade Mustang Madness social reward day that they earn if they have less than 3 behavior marks in a week. Jobs: Student can pick a job that they would like to have for the year. The jobs and descriptions are posted to this blog. They were also given a hard copy. Students need to review them and turn in their request for their 1st, 2nd and 3rd job choice. They were given descriptions and an application to take home. They can fill out and return tomorrow. Me Bags: 4th grade teachers went to all the rooms and shared about themselves. HW: -Read 30 minutes and put the name of the book and the amount of minutes in their binder. Parents/guardians please sign. - Bring a book to read - Parents sign the TKO - Taking Kids Outside and return to school - Students can pick jobs they are interested and return the application. |
